President Paul Kagame has congratulated Mia Amor Mottley on her re-election as prime minister of Barbados for a third term.

In a message posted on X on February 13, 2026, President Kagame said: “I congratulate my sister, Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley, on her well-deserved re-election.” He emphasized the strong friendship between Rwanda and Barbados, adding, “We look forward to further strengthening our cooperation in the years ahead. I wish you and the people of Barbados continued success and prosperity.”

Mottley’s Barbados Labour Party won all 30 seats in the general election, securing a decisive victory over the opposition Democratic Labour Party candidate, Ralph Thorne.

Rwanda and Barbados maintain close bilateral ties, including a 2022 agreement promoting air travel and enabling RwandAir to operate flights to Barbados. These initiatives follow President Kagame’s official visit to the island in April 2022, which strengthened cooperation between the two nations.

Barbados, located in the western Atlantic near the Caribbean, is a 439-square-kilometre island with a population of around 285,000. The country stretches 34 km from south to north and 23 km from east to west, with a total coastline of 97 km.
