A commercial building housing multiple shops in Rubavu District was gutted by fire on Monday morning, February 16, 2026, destroying a range of goods, including clothing. Authorities confirmed no injuries or fatalities were reported.
SP Sylvestre Twajamahoro, spokesperson for the Western Province Police, told reporters that the fire broke out around 10:00 a.m. in Rubavu town. The cause of the blaze remains unknown, and investigations are ongoing to determine its origin and the full extent of the damage.
“Fortunately, no one was injured or lost their life. Our teams are continuing investigations to establish the cause and quantify the losses,” SP Twajamahoro said.
Police have urged residents and business owners to equip themselves with basic firefighting tools, such as sand, small shovels, and portable fire extinguishers, and to report incidents immediately to ensure rapid response.
The incident highlights ongoing concerns about fire safety in commercial areas of Rubavu, where rapid urban growth and limited safety infrastructure increase vulnerability to such disasters.
Authorities have not yet provided an estimate of the financial losses, but local shop owners reported significant destruction of merchandise. Emergency response teams contained the fire before it spread to neighboring buildings.
This event underscores the need for stricter fire prevention measures and public awareness campaigns to safeguard lives and property in Rwanda’s rapidly expanding urban centers.
