Rwandan peacekeepers serving in the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (Rwanbatt-1) have been awarded UN medals in recognition of their outstanding contribution to maintaining peace and security.
The award ceremony was held at UNMISS headquarters in Tomping, Juba, and presided over by Maj Gen Robert Yaw Affram, Deputy Force Commander of UNMISS, who described the medals as a symbol of professionalism, dedication, and courage under challenging conditions.
“The UN medal awarded today recognises long hours of service, nights spent on guard, and steadfast commitment to peacekeeping responsibilities. It reflects dedication, exemplary conduct, and bravery. This is a medal that is earned through hard work, not given lightly,” Maj Gen Affram said.
He also commended the Government of Rwanda and the Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) for continuously deploying disciplined and capable troops to UNMISS missions.
Lt Col Paul Ndushabandi, Commander of Rwanbatt-1, praised his troops for their resilience, courage, and commitment during their ten-month deployment.
“I urge Rwanbatt-1 to sustain this dedication throughout the remainder of the mission. This medal ceremony is another milestone in our honorable mission of protecting humanity,” he said.
The event featured a military parade and traditional Rwandan dances performed by Rwanbatt-1, celebrating both the troops’ achievements and Rwanda’s cultural heritage.
