Rwandans living in the Netherlands have celebrated Rwanda’s 32nd Liberation anniversary, paying tribute to the Rwanda Patriotic Army (RPA) for stopping the Genocide against the Tutsi and leading the country’s recovery journey.
The event, held on July 4, 2026, brought together members of the Rwandan community and friends of Rwanda, with Rwanda’s Ambassador to the Netherlands, Lambert Dushimimana, reflecting on the country’s transformation over the past three decades.
Ambassador Dushimimana said Liberation Day remains a defining moment in Rwanda’s history, marking the restoration of the country’s dignity and the beginning of a new chapter.
“Liberation Day holds a special place in Rwanda’s history. It is the day our country regained not only its dignity but also its future,” he said.
He highlighted reconciliation, unity, responsibility and a shared vision among Rwandans as key pillars that have shaped the country’s progress since 1994.
The ambassador said Rwanda’s development has been driven by strong institutions, investment in people, empowerment of women and youth, innovation and environmental conservation rather than reliance on natural resources.
“Rwanda’s development has not come from having abundant natural resources, but from purposeful leadership, unity and citizens committed to advancing their country,” he said.
Liberation Day is marked annually on July 4 to commemorate the victory of the RPA in 1994, which ended the Genocide against the Tutsi and opened the way for Rwanda’s reconstruction and development.
