Senior government officials, political party representatives, diplomats and families of politicians killed during the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi on April 13, 2026, gathered at the Rebero Genocide Memorial to conclude the Genocide commemoration week.
The annual ceremony brought together national leaders, members of the diplomatic corps accredited to Rwanda, and relatives of victims to honour politicians who stood against division and were killed during the genocide.
In his remarks, Senate President Dr François Xavier Kalinda said Rwanda has drawn lasting lessons from the Genocide against the Tutsi, stressing that the Constitution remains a cornerstone of national unity and shared values.
He highlighted that the Constitution enshrines the criminalization of genocide, the fight against its denial and revisionism, and the commitment to eradicate genocide ideology in all its forms.
Dr Kalinda also underscored the constitutional commitment to eliminating divisionism based on ethnicity and region, while strengthening unity among Rwandans.
He called on leaders to intensify efforts to combat genocide ideology, describing it as a continuous responsibility requiring sustained collective action.
The Senate President further commended young people for their role in countering genocide denial, urging them to continue safeguarding historical truth and contributing to a united and resilient nation built on unity and accountability.
