President Faustin-Archange Touadéra has been sworn in for a new term as leader of the Central African Republic (CAR), commending Rwanda’s security forces for their decisive role in restoring stability in the country.

The inauguration in Bangui brought together regional leaders, with Rwanda’s Prime Minister Dr. Justin Nsengiyumva representing President Paul Kagame. Heads of state and senior officials from across Africa also attended the ceremony.

In his inaugural address, Touadéra singled out Rwanda as a trusted partner, particularly during sensitive periods such as elections, where Rwandan troops helped secure both civilians and state institutions. He also paid tribute to national forces, UN peacekeepers under MINUSCA, and allied troops for their continued efforts to safeguard the country.

Touadéra has repeatedly acknowledged President Kagame’s support in CAR’s stabilisation efforts, describing Rwanda’s contribution as critical to restoring order and confidence.

First elected in 2016 and re-elected in 2020, Touadéra now embarks on his third term.

Rwanda maintains a strong presence in CAR through both UN peacekeeping and bilateral defence cooperation. Since 2014, Rwandan troops and police have played a central role in protecting civilians, securing key infrastructure, and ensuring the safety of national leaders and UN personnel.

A special Rwandan contingent of about 1,200 troops is currently deployed, tasked with securing Bangui and its outskirts, enabling daily life and economic activity to continue. They also guard strategic sites, including the presidential residence in Damara.

In recognition of their professionalism and discipline, Touadéra has on several occasions awarded medals to Rwandan peacekeepers serving in the country.
