President Paul Kagame has begun a two-day working visit to Botswana, in a move aimed at strengthening bilateral ties and expanding economic cooperation between the two countries.
Kagame arrived in Gaborone on Wednesday afternoon, where he was received by President Duma Boko.
The visit comes shortly after the second session of the Joint Permanent Commission for Cooperation (JPCC), signaling renewed momentum in Rwanda–Botswana relations. Officials say discussions are expected to focus on deepening collaboration in key sectors, including trade, investment, and institutional partnerships.
The engagement is also seen as part of broader efforts to strengthen economic linkages between Central and Southern Africa, positioning both countries for increased cross-regional trade.
Botswana remains a key player in Africa’s extractive sector, ranking as the continent’s leading diamond producer and second globally after Russia. The country is also recognized for producing high-quality diamonds, including a 2,492-carat stone discovered in 2024—one of the largest ever recorded.
