Police in Rwanda have arrested two suspects in Gasabo District for alleged trafficking and distribution of cannabis, following a community-led tip-off that led to their apprehension in possession of drugs prepared for sale.
The suspects include a 43-year-old woman and a 34-year-old man, arrested in Rutunga Sector, Kigabiro Cell, Karwiru Village, where they were reportedly found with two kilograms of cannabis and 250 sachets ready for distribution.
Suspected drug supply chain uncovered
According to the Police spokesperson for Kigali City, CIP Wellars Gahonzire, preliminary investigations indicate that the woman admitted ownership of the drugs, while the man allegedly acted as a broker responsible for identifying clients in exchange for a commission.
Police say the arrests were made after residents provided information indicating that the woman had been involved in cannabis trafficking activities for an extended period.
Acting on the intelligence, officers carried out an operation that led to the suspects being caught in possession of the narcotics while allegedly preparing to deliver them to clients.
“After receiving information from residents, police officers caught her in possession of cannabis while delivering it to clients identified by the broker, who was expected to earn a commission of 4,000 Rwandan francs,” CIP Gahonzire said.
Community cooperation praised
The suspects are currently held at Rutunga Police Station as investigations continue and case files are prepared for submission to judicial authorities.
Police commended residents for their timely information, saying it played a key role in preventing the drugs from reaching the community.
Authorities noted that the arrest reflects increasing public awareness of the dangers of drug abuse and the importance of community participation in crime prevention.
Warning against drug trafficking
CIP Gahonzire urged those involved in drug trafficking to abandon the illegal trade, stressing that security agencies are increasingly dismantling drug distribution networks.
He encouraged individuals engaged in such activities to seek lawful means of income and avoid actions that endanger public safety.
Strict penalties under Rwandan law
In Rwanda, cannabis is classified as a prohibited narcotic drug. Individuals found guilty of production, cultivation, processing, transportation, possession, distribution, or sale face life imprisonment and fines ranging between 20 million and 30 million Rwandan francs.
Authorities continue to intensify anti-drug operations across the country, relying on intelligence gathering and community policing to curb the spread of narcotics.
