The City of Kigali has announced plans to expand its network of dedicated pedestrian running lanes, known as “Green Carpet” tracks, as part of efforts to promote physical fitness and healthy living among residents.

Kigali City Mayor Samuel Dusengiyumva made the announcement on Sunday, June 21, 2026, in Bugesera during a media briefing held after the finals of the Umurenge Kagame Cup.

He said the expansion is intended to encourage more residents to take up regular physical exercise in safe, well-designed spaces free from vehicle traffic.

Existing Green Carpet routes in Kigali include the track in Nyarutarama near Kigali Golf Course and another in Kimihurura, close to the Office of the Prime Minister.

The designated lanes are specially marked running corridors that allow athletes and the general public to exercise freely without interference from vehicles, supporting the city’s broader public health and urban wellness agenda.

Dusengiyumva said new Green Carpet routes are planned in different parts of the city, including a sports corridor under development in Rebero and another projected near Nyamirambo around the Kigali Pelé Stadium area.

He urged residents to embrace sports and make full use of existing and upcoming facilities, including the bi-monthly Car Free Day exercise initiative.

“We want to encourage residents of Kigali City to engage in physical exercise. We have sports facilities, and more are being developed in Nyamirambo and Rebero, but they should also actively participate in Car Free Day so that we maintain good health,” he said.

He added that the city will continue working with residents to expand sports infrastructure that supports both healthy lifestyles and productivity.

“It is possible to exercise, remain productive, and also enjoy the benefits that come from sports,” he said.

The City of Kigali continues to invest in urban sports infrastructure, including stadium upgrades, development of public sports zones, and citywide fitness initiatives aimed at promoting active living among residents.
