Kigali urged to fast-track construction of 268 drainage channels to reduce landslide risk

Authorities have urged the City of Kigali to urgently accelerate the construction of drainage infrastructure, warning that delays could heighten the risk of landslides and other related disasters.

The call is contained in the Office of the Auditor General’s report for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2025, which highlights significant gaps in planned urban infrastructure, particularly in newly developed residential settlements.

Auditor General Kamuhire Alexis noted that although roads have been constructed in several planned villages, corresponding drainage systems remain largely incomplete, especially in Gasabo, Nyarugenge and Kicukiro districts.

He pointed to findings from inspections conducted in eight settlements, including Kabuye Phase II, Gasanze Phase III, Masizi, Nyagahinga, Gisasa, Gasharu, Nunga Phase II and Gahanga, where drainage works were found to be missing despite existing road infrastructure.

“The audit established that out of 320 required drainage channels in Kigali City, 268, representing 84 percent, have not been constructed. This gap poses a potential risk of landslides,” he said.

The report recommends that Kigali City strengthen coordination with development partners to ensure the timely construction of the remaining drainage systems.

Experts caution that the absence of proper drainage infrastructure not only increases the likelihood of landslides but also accelerates soil erosion, posing safety risks to residents and pedestrians in affected areas.
