Rwanda’s minister of internal security, Vincent Biruta, has delivered a message from President Paul Kagame to President Denis Sassou Nguesso of the Republic of Congo.
The message congratulated President Sassou Nguesso on his re-election for a fifth term, officially assumed on 25 March 2026, and wished him health and prosperity in his renewed mandate.
President Kagame also called on President Sassou Nguesso to support Rwanda’s nominee, Louise Mushikiwabo, for a third term as secretary-general of the International Organisation of La Francophonie (OIF). Mushikiwabo has led the organization since 2019.
During the discussions, the two leaders reviewed ways to deepen bilateral relations, highlighting strong cooperation in diplomacy, politics, security, and trade.
President Sassou Nguesso, 82, was re-elected on 15 March 2026 with 94.82% of the vote, securing his fifth term in office. President Kagame publicly congratulated him on X for this electoral success.
Rwanda and Congo have long-standing ties, with collaboration spanning security, trade, education, diplomacy, and politics. Rwanda opened its embassy in Congo-Brazzaville in August 2016 to reinforce bilateral relations.
Bilateral agreements between the two countries cover air transport, tourism, energy, justice, environmental protection, and fisheries since 2011, while agreements signed in November 2021 expanded cooperation to military, higher education, land management, sustainable development, environmental conservation, trade, and air transport.
