PAC to grill 76 institutions over public finance irregularities in two-week hearings

The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) has announced that it will hold public hearings for 76 institutions flagged for irregularities in the management of public finances and assets.

The hearings, scheduled to run over a two-week period, will scrutinise findings contained in the Auditor General’s report for the financial year ending June 30, 2025.

Senior officials from the affected institutions are expected to appear before PAC to account for the irregularities and present corrective measures taken to address them.

PAC Chairperson Muhakwa Valens said the hearings are not only aimed at exposing financial mismanagement, but also at strengthening accountability and improving public resource governance.

“Our primary objective is to ensure that every public fund is used for its intended purpose, on time, and without wastage,” he said.

He added that the hearings also provide institutions with an opportunity to demonstrate progress in correcting audit findings and improving financial management systems.

PAC said it will focus on entities with serious financial management weaknesses, including those whose financial statements were not fairly presented, those with errors or incomplete reporting, and those that implemented less than 80 percent of recommendations from previous Auditor General reports.

Institutions that underwent special audits revealing significant financial gaps will also be questioned to explain the causes and present corrective action plans.

The hearings form part of PAC’s oversight mandate to scrutinise public expenditure and reinforce accountability in the use of public resources.
