REG VC and Police WVC win 2026 Liberation Cup titles

REG VC in the men’s category and Police WVC in the women’s category have been crowned champions of the 2026 Liberation Cup volleyball tournament, which concluded on Friday at Petit Stade in Remera.

The annual competition was held over two days and brought together leading clubs from Rwanda’s volleyball league in both the men’s and women’s categories.

Men’s competition

Five teams featured in the men’s tournament, split into two groups. Group A consisted of REG VC and Police VC, while Group B included APR VC, Kepler VC and Gisagara VC.

REG VC, coached by Mugisha Bavuga Benon, topped Group A after defeating Police VC 3-1, with both teams advancing to the knockout stage.

Gisagara VC finished top of Group B after victories over APR VC and Kepler VC, while APR VC secured progression after beating Kepler VC 3-0 in a decisive match.

In the semi-finals, Police VC overcame Gisagara VC 3-2, while REG VC defeated APR VC 3-1 to set up a final against their group-stage opponents.

REG VC went on to defeat defending champions Police VC 3-1 in the final, claiming their third trophy of the season after previously winning the national league and the Padiri Kayumba Emmanuel Memorial Cup.

Gisagara VC secured third place after a 3-2 win over APR VC.

Women’s competition

The women’s tournament featured four teams, which went straight into the semi-finals.

Defending champions Police WVC booked their place in the final after defeating RRA WVC 3-1, while APR WVC overcame Kepler WVC 3-0.

Kepler WVC were without their captain and setter Uwera Lea, who was absent following her wedding, while the team also suffered an injury setback to her replacement ahead of the third-place playoff.

In the final, Police WVC delivered a commanding performance to beat APR WVC 3-0 and retain their title, securing their second trophy of the season after the BK Arena Volleyball Tournament 2025.

RRA WVC were awarded third place after Kepler WVC withdrew from the playoff due to injuries.

About the competition

The Liberation Cup is an annual tournament held in Rwanda to commemorate Liberation Day, marking July 4, 1994, when the Rwanda Patriotic Front (RPF-Inkotanyi) ended the genocide against the Tutsi and liberated the country.
