Private sector actors in Rubavu District have provided support to vulnerable survivors of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi through the construction of houses and the donation of livestock.

The initiative, carried out on June 23, saw the handover of 15 newly built houses to beneficiary households, alongside the distribution of eight livestock units to improve livelihoods among survivors in need.

The activity was also part of preparations for commemorative events marking the 32nd anniversary of the Genocide against the Tutsi. A remembrance ceremony was held at the Commune Rouge Genocide Memorial in Gisenyi Sector.

The initiative was organized by members of the private sector in Rubavu and brought together local government officials, security organs and other stakeholders.

Rubavu District Mayor Mulindwa Prosper commended the private sector for its contribution to improving the welfare of genocide survivors, describing it as a key partner in the district’s development agenda.

He urged business operators to continue promoting unity and reconciliation, particularly in cross-border trade activities, which are central to the district’s economy.

Mulindwa also called on the private sector to remain vigilant against genocide ideology and to ensure that economic influence is used responsibly in support of national cohesion and stability.
