Rwanda has reaffirmed its commitment to remaining a key partner in promoting gender equality, women’s empowerment, and inclusive development within the United Nations system.

The position was presented during the annual UN leadership meeting held on June 26, 2026.

Rwanda’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Robert Kayinamura, outlined the country’s contributions and priorities across three main areas: the implementation progress of UN Women’s 2022–2025 strategic plan, oversight and investigative mechanisms, and broader UN institutional reforms.

On the implementation of the UN Women strategy, Rwanda welcomed progress achieved in advancing gender equality, while emphasizing the need to keep gender mainstreaming at the core of ongoing UN reform discussions.

As deliberations continue under the UN80 reform agenda, Rwanda stressed that gains made in integrating gender equality across UN programmes should be preserved and further strengthened rather than diluted.

The country also called for stronger accountability frameworks and effective monitoring systems to ensure that agreed targets are fully implemented.

On oversight and investigations, Rwanda commended efforts by UN Women to strengthen internal audit and investigative functions, noting that enhanced capacity in these areas is critical to improving trust, transparency, and governance.

It further highlighted the importance of robust data management systems to ensure that oversight and investigative work is based on accurate, secure, and reliable information.

Rwanda urged the United Nations to safeguard the independence and long-term effectiveness of oversight and investigative institutions, describing them as essential pillars of accountability and efficient resource management.

The statement comes as Rwanda continues to be widely recognized for its progress in advancing gender equality, with women playing a significant role in leadership and decision-making across public and private sectors.
