The Government of Rwanda says the costs of its troops deployed to fight terrorism in Mozambique are ten times higher than the financial support provided by the European Peace Facility (EPF).
Government Spokesperson Yolande Makolo highlighted on X that beyond financial costs, Rwandan soldiers have made significant sacrifices, risking their lives to restore security in Cabo Delgado. Rwanda’s deployment began on July 9, 2021, with an initial 1,000 personnel, growing to nearly 5,000 by May 2025.
The mission has helped reclaim Palma and Mocímboa da Praia from armed groups, allowing over 250,000 displaced residents to return home, reopening businesses, ports, and airports. Troops also secured major investments, including a $20 billion TotalEnergies gas project halted due to insecurity.
Makolo stressed that Rwanda’s contribution was motivated by solidarity, not financial gain, and said the government may reassess its involvement if the mission is not properly recognized or supported.
