The Rwanda Forestry Authority (RFA), in partnership with the Ministry of Environment, has launched the 2026/27 tree-planting season, targeting the planting of 100 million trees across the country.
The season was officially launched on Saturday, November 7, 2026, at Nyabigugu site in Murinja Cell, Gahanga Sector, Kicukiro District, where more than 2,000 trees were planted across eight hectares.
The species planted included Umuhumuro, Umusave, Umufu, Umugote, jacaranda and Delonix regia.
Kigali City Deputy Mayor in charge of Economic and Social Affairs, Martine Urujeni, thanked residents who participated in the exercise and urged them to continue planting trees in their communities, particularly fruit trees.
She also called on schools to take an active role in the initiative.
The Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Environment, Fidèle Bingwa, urged residents to protect the newly planted trees from damage and ensure they grow properly so they can benefit future generations.
The 2026/27 tree-planting season is being held under the theme, “My Tree, My Legacy”, which seeks to encourage every Rwandan to contribute to environmental protection and biodiversity conservation while improving community well-being.
The initiative is part of ongoing efforts to protect the environment, conserve biodiversity and address the effects of climate change, as Rwanda seeks to increase its tree and forest cover.
More than 100 million trees are expected to be planted countrywide in collaboration with various partners.
Planned activities during the season include planting trees in production forests; integrating trees into farming systems to combat soil erosion and increase agricultural productivity; planting fruit trees to improve household nutrition; and raising public awareness about the protection of planted trees through campaigns and training.
